As you might expect, what’s currently hot in kitchen trends varies widely by age group.* Let’s take a look and see what we’ve got cookin’!
Millennials (age 25 – 34) are divided between two very different styles, modern and farmhouse style.
The Modern Kitchen
The modern kitchen trend favors minimalism and clean lines. In 2017 a modern kitchen has sleek elements such as:
- Euro Frameless cabinets. This type of cabinet has doors that lay over the actual “box” of the cabinet, leaving the door flush with the edges of the box;
- Slab-doors. They are, as you can probably guess, flat like a slab! This type of door ads to the sleek feel that is so integral to a modern aesthetic;
- Thinner ½ inch Countertops – Countertops are getting thinner and made from some of your favorite materials such as stainless steel, marble, concrete and quartz;
- Neutral color palettes;
- Shiny, polished surfaces; and
- Minimal decorative elements, usually in smooth, geometric shapes.
The Farmhouse Kitchen
Farmhouse style kitchen trend seems to be seems to be the polar opposite of modern style, as it embraces a more detailed, antique and purposefully cluttered look.
Some of the earmarks of a farmhouse kitchen are:
- Open shelving. This trend is a favorite, the shelving is often accompanied by all white dishes and simple glassware. You can add a pop of color with a ceramic vase!
- Tons of wood. There can be wood beams, wood floors, a wood range hood cover, and even wood countertops. Let’s not forget the required antique wood kitchen island! You can also add some additional character to your design by using reclaimed wood for custom pieces.
- A Farmhouse Sink. Also known as an apron-front sink, no farmhouse kitchen is complete without one.
- Cream or Gray Cabinets. Farmhouse style cabinets are often a more traditional shaker style cabinet.
- Cozy antique touches. To finish off the look, carefully selected antique (or antique looking) pieces of décor will round things off nicely.
Fun Fact*: Whichever style of kitchen you choose, regardless of age, statistics show that one-third of homeowners who remodel their kitchens tend to cook at home more often, and eat foods that are better for them. I guess you can say they’re inspired by their new surroundings!
